Roadway Surfaces
- Asphalt roadways are constructed differently from asphalt parking lots and driveways.
- Roads consist of a binder course ranging from 1 inch to 4 inches thick, with a wearing course from 1 to 3 inches thick, topped by a friction course.
- Parking lots have no wearing course.
- Diesel spills are most damaging to new asphalt, but it is not necessary to remove the whole surface to make repairs.
- Mobilization and demobilization costs for asphalt repairs are considerable. It’s a lot of work to get a paving operation up and running.
The life of an asphalt surface depends greatly upon the kind and amount of traffic it carries.
